Civic disobedience activist awarded
Havana, CUBA. The Washington-based International
Republican Institute will award on February 5 the Democracy Prize to Cuban
political prisoner Dr. Oscar Elias
Biscet Gonzales.
Dr. Biscet
will be represented at the award ceremony by Laida Carro. The International
Republican Institute is a private charity organization set up in the United
States in April 1983. Dr.
Biscet was arrested on December 6, 2002 while
trying to hold a seminar on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights at a
private house. He is being held in the Combinado del Este prison near Havana.
