"BIRTHDAY BEHIND BARS"

Today you celebrate forty-two years of your life behind bars - jail bars that
have trapped your youth, your dreams, your aspirations and yearnings. These bars
are enemies of human freedom, of life, and of happiness and, though they have
not permitted us to hold you close and speak to you for many months; they will
not prevent that today you receive the spiritual kiss and embrace sent by your
parents, wife, family, and friends.
These jail bars will not prevent that on your birthday - Sunday, July 20, some
swallow or other will penetrate the darkness of your jail cell and sing you a
melody which will certainly rouse your heart and fill it with joy. Its song will
deliver you an embrace for life, for peace and happiness and, in its beak, a
flower in the name of humanity.

Dr. Biscet is a prisoner of conscience in Cuba, condemned April 7, 2003, in a
summary trial to 25 years in prison during a wave of repression when 75
activists, independent journalists and librarians were sentenced in the island
to long prison terms for defending truth and justice in their own country.

Cuarenta y dos años de vida cumples hoy tras las rejas. Verjas que te han tenido
atrapado tu juventud, tus sueños, tus aspiraciones y anhelos. Verjas enemigas de
la libertad humana, la vida y la felicidad. Verjas que hace muchos meses no nos
permiten abrazarte y hablarte pero que hoy no podrán evitar que llegue a ti el
abrazo y el beso espiritual que te envían tus padres, esposa, hijos, familiares
y amigos. Como tampoco podrán evitar que este domingo 20 de julio, día de tu
cumpleaños, alguna que otra golondrina penetre en tu celda y desde el corazón de
las tinieblas te cante una melodía que seguro despertará tu corazón y lo llenará
de gozo porque su canto te llevará un abrazo por la vida, un abrazo por la paz,
un abrazo por la libertad y la felicidad, y en su pico una flor en nombre de la
humanidad.

El Dr. Oscar E. Biscet es un prisionero de conciencia en Cuba, condenado en
juicio sumario el pasado 7 de abril del 2003, a 25 años de prisión en una ola de
represión en la Isla que llevó a otros 74 activistas, periodistas y
bibliotecarios independientes a cumplir largas condenas de cárcel por su defensa
de la verdad y la justicia en su país.
